This post is pertinent to you if you’ve been struggling to reach a goal/objective/purpose in your life. This is another way of looking at what you do every day to minimize time wasters and get closer to your goals.
To create means you are thinking and doing- taking action towards your passions. Do you like to paint, take photos, sing or play sports? All of these involve both mental and physical aspects. Creating stuff means you’re adding value to the world and actively participating. By creating, your keeping your mind and body active.
Consuming on the other hand means you’re taking in and digesting other peoples creations. This isn’t always a bad thing. Reading non fiction Books for instance has value and this is a form of consumption. Okay, I’m biased. I like to only read non-fiction, but if you read fiction this is better than watching a movie since you have to think in order to read and comprehend 🙂
It’s the quality of the material and how often. If the consumption outweighs the creative then this is an imbalance. The idea is to spend less time allowing other people’s influence into your life vs. your creations going into the world.
Consuming means less time you’re spending on what you love. Consuming material has limited thinking involved compared with making stuff yourself. Sometimes I feel with certain songs or movies I’m losing brain cells because they’re so stupid.
When you’re consuming too many YouTube videos or scrolling through hours of Facebook you’re living other peoples lives- not yours.
If you feel lost – or frustrated because you can’t work on projects you love or meet certain goals then evaluate the time you spend on consuming information.
I wrote this post because there are times I find myself consuming more than creating. My “broken windows’ I identified are my YouTube commentators. I’ll go to one video thinking I’ll only watch one. Next thing I know I’ve watched 5 other people and spent 45 minutes. This is time I could have been writing an article or taking photos.
My wish for this post is to motivate you to create more than you consume. An honest reflection of how you spend your time should give you a huge boost to become the creator/ active participant in your life where you as the main star in YOUR life and are adding value to this world!
